    Mexico City, May 30, 2012 – U.S. Ambassador Anthony Wayne honored Layda Negrete, nominated by the U.S. Embassy for The Secretary’s International Women of Courage Award for her contributions to promoting criminal justice reform in Mexico. Through her documentary films on Mexico’s inquisitorial criminal justice system, Ms. Negrete has educated people here and around the world on the challenges inherent to the existing system, including lengthy pre-trial detentions.

    United States Attorney Robert Pitman announced that in Las Cruces, NM, today, a federal judge sentenced 52-year-old Ian Garland, a federally licensed firearms dealer who did business as Chaparral Guns in Chaparral, NM, to five years in federal prison for his role in a firearms trafficking operation.

    Mexico City, May 8, 2012 – A Mexican federal judge has sentenced a Mexican man to 29 years in federal prison for possession, transmission and production of child pornography. This sentence is the longest ever issued in Mexico on child pornography charges.

    Washington, May 8, 2012 – The U.S. Department of the Treasury’s Office of Foreign Assets Control (OFAC) today announced the designation of four key Sinaloa Cartel operatives, including two sons of Sinaloa drug lord Joaquin “Chapo” Guzman Loera. Today’s action, pursuant to the Foreign Narcotics Kingpin Designation Act (Kingpin Act), prohibits U.S. persons from conducting financial or commercial transactions with these four individuals, and also freezes any assets they may have under U.S. jurisdiction.
