U.S. Ambassador Anthony Wayne Meets with PEN International Delegation and Renews Commitment to Journalists
Mexico City, January 27, 2012 – U.S. Ambassador Anthony Wayne met today with a visiting delegation headed by PEN International president John Ralston Saul. Ambassador Wayne used the meeting to outline Embassy efforts to support Mexican government and civil society initiatives to protect reporters. Mr. Saul and his colleagues explained their efforts to encourage and support journalists in Mexico. The Ambassador and the PEN delegation had a very rich and productive discussion on this important set of issues.

U.S. Ambassador Wayne Welcomes Governor of Durango to the Embassy for Dialogue
Mexico City, January 25, 2012 – Ambassador Anthony Wayne met Tuesday with Jorge Herrera Caldera, Governor of Durango, at the U.S. Embassy in Mexico City. The Ambassador and Governor discussed the many interests shared by the United States and Mexico, from economic prosperity and investment opportunities to the public security challenges both face. The Governor briefed the Ambassador on the extreme hardship caused by the drought of the past 15 months and steps being taken to address humanitarian needs in the state.

Ambassador Wayne, UNAM Rector Narro Discuss U.S.-Mexican University Exchanges
Mexico City, January 25, 2012 –U.S. Ambassador Anthony Wayne met with Mexico’s National Autonomous University (UNAM) Chancellor Dr. Jose Narro Robles to discuss the longstanding collaboration between UNAM, U.S. universities and the U.S. Embassy, including the participation of UNAM students and professors in the Embassy’s educational programs which include Fulbright scholarship, Jóvenes en Acción, Leadership Institute for Indigenous Youth and the National Youth Science Camp.

Mexico City, January 24, 2012 -- U.S. Ambassador Anthony Wayne congratulated Mexico on its admission into the Wassenaar Arrangement. “Mexico’s acceptance into the Wassenaar Arrangement is recognition of the great strides that the Government of Mexico has made in bringing its strategic trade control system into compliance with international nonproliferation standards. The United States of America congratulates Mexico on this noteworthy achievement.”

Ambassador Wayne Meets with Mexican High School Students Participating in Jovenes en Accion
U.S. Ambassador Anthony Wayne and colleagues from the Secretariat of Public Education, the Secretariat of Foreign Affairs and private sector sponsors met today with six of the Mexican high school students participating in Jovenes en Accion. Jovenes is a joint initiative of the U.S. Embassy, Mexico’s Public Education Ministry and the private sector of both countries that offers outstanding Mexican youth the opportunity to develop their leadership skills and promote positive social change in their communities.

Mexico City, January 20, 2012--Ambassador Anthony Wayne met Thursday with Carlos Lozano de la Torre, Governor of Aguascalientes, at the U.S. Embassy in Mexico City. The Ambassador and Governor discussed the many interests shared by the United States and Mexico, from economic prosperity and investment opportunities to the public security challenges both face. The Ambassador welcomed the opportunity to learn more about Aguascalientes. During the meeting, Governor Lozano and Ambassador Wayne discussed the importance of job creation to the economic well-being of the state and its inhabitants.

U.S. and Mexican Governments Announce United Effort to Combat Climate Change
Mexico City, January 19, 2012 – U.S. Ambassador Anthony Wayne today joined President Felipe Calderón at Los Pinos to witness the signing of a Memorandum of Understanding between the two governments to strengthen and expand cooperation on environmental issues with the Mexico Global Climate Change (GCC) Program, a five-year, approximately $70 million, program.

Treasury Targets Top Guatemalan Drug Trafficker
WASHINGTON - January 19, 2012 - The U.S. Department of the Treasury’s Office of Foreign Assets Control (OFAC) today announced the designation of Guatemalan national Marllory Dadiana Chacon Rossell and seven other individuals and entities connected to Chacon Rossell’s drug trafficking and money laundering organization as Specially Designated Narcotics Traffickers (SDNTs).

Treasury Sanctions Three Drug Traffickers Tied to Mexican Drug Lord Chapo Guzman
The U.S. Department of the Treasury’s Office of Foreign Assets Control (OFAC) today designated three individuals with ties to Sinaloa Cartel leader Joaquin Guzman Loera (a.k.a. Chapo Guzman) as Specially Designated Narcotics Traffickers (SDNTs) pursuant to the Foreign Narcotics Kingpin Designation Act (Kingpin Act). As a result of today’s action, U.S. persons are prohibited from conducting financial or commercial transactions with the designees and any assets they may have under U.S. jurisdiction are frozen.
