Ambassador Wayne, UNAM Rector Narro Discuss US-Mexican University Exchanges
Mexico City, January 25, 2012 –U.S. Ambassador Anthony Wayne met with Mexico’s National Autonomous University (UNAM) Chancellor Dr. Jose Narro Robles to discuss the longstanding collaboration between UNAM, U.S. universities and the U.S. Embassy, including the participation of UNAM students and professors in the Embassy’s educational programs which include Fulbright scholarship, Jóvenes en Acción, Leadership Institute for Indigenous Youth and the National Youth Science Camp.
“I was pleased to get to know Chancellor Narro, head of the one of the oldest institutions of higher education in the Americas, and a university with so many ongoing relationships with U.S. universities,” Ambassador Wayne said. “For example, under UNAM’s collaboration agreement with the University of California system, up to 100 student exchanges annually take place each way. And through UNAM’s relationship with the University of Arizona, their researchers developed an antidote against scorpion poison, the first biological product to be produced in Latin America and approved by the U.S. Food and Drug Administration (FDA). I am also delighted that UNAM is prominently represented in the Fulbright-Garcia Robles program for graduate studies, research and teaching.”
Ambassador Wayne and Chancellor Narro discussed ways of enhancing academic exchange programs in order to make them more accessible to students and academics on both sides of the border as well as to seek more opportunities to share the rich cultural heritage of both countries and promote bilateral research projects that yield greater contributions to both societies. UNAM has historically been a partner of the U.S. in person–to-person exchanges and academic development in both countries.
Ambassador Wayne thanked Chancellor Narro for the university’s continued interest in working with U.S. counterparts and for hosting Embassy and Fulbright speakers and specialists.
