Ambassador Wayne Inaugurates Bi-National State Treasurers Forum
Mexico City, February 10, 2012– With the governor of Campeche, Fernando Ortega Bernés, Ambassador Wayne inaugurated the annual forum between the U.S. National Association of State Treasurers (NAST) and Mexico’s Comisión Permanente de Funcionarios Fiscales (CPFF) in San Francisco de Campeche and highlighted this very positive example of bilateral cooperation.
“State treasurers are the guardians of the resources of the state and their work directly impacts their fellow citizens. This forum is an important opportunity to exchange best practices and build relationships which will lead to more solid and transparent state finances,” Ambassador Wayne said.
Governor Ortega Bernés emphasized the importance of the bilateral dialogue, saying, “The close relationship between our two countries brings benefits to both sides.”
Ambassador Wayne congratulated the Governor, and the President of the CPFF Tirso Agustin Rodriguez, on hosting a successful forum and commended the Governor on his efforts to strengthen the state’s economy while protecting its natural resources. Rodriguez highlighted a strengthened connection to the United States as an opportunity to take better, more sustainable decisions related to state finances to protect the environment. The forum discussion focused on sustainability and Ambassador Wayne noted the United States’ close partnership with Mexico on this issue with the January launch of the Mexico Global Climate Change (GCC) Program. This five year plan will commit an expected $70 million dollars to Mexico’s climate change efforts.
