Ambassador Wayne Hosts Meeting with Mexican Government Officials and NGOs to Combat Violence Against Women

MEXICO CITY, March 6, 2012 -- In anticipation of Thursday’s commemoration of International Women’s Day, Ambassador Wayne met today with Mexican government and civil society organizations to discuss the current challenges and efforts to address the problem of violence against women.

The Ambassador said, “The United States remains committed to advancing gender issues worldwide, and to countering violence against women wherever it occurs, including in our own society.  We recognize the importance of the many quiet heroes who have stood up for the rights of women in Mexico, often against great odds and at high personal risk. Ending violence against women and establishing women as full and equal partners in society is a prerequisite for flourishing families, communities and nations.  I salute the Mexican Government and civil society for working together towards this goal.  The U.S. stands in solidarity with all Mexicans in this quest for gender equality around the world.”
