U.S. Ambassador Wayne and Agricultural Secretary Mayorga Discuss Market Access
Mexico City, November 24, 2011 — U.S. Ambassador Anthony Wayne and Agricultural Secretary Francisco Javier Mayorga Castañeda met to discuss the strong agricultural trade ties between the United States and Mexico and the application of objective, scientific methods when making market access decisions.
“The United States Department of Agriculture (USDA) has an extremely broad relationship with the Secretariat of Agriculture (SAGARPA),” Ambassador Wayne said. “Our agricultural markets have grown increasingly integrated, with bilateral trade flows of over $30 billion. The scope of our shared activities includes, to name a few, the suppression of plant and animal diseases, joint economic research, the enhancement of Mexico’s agricultural extension system, and more.”
Ambassador Wayne and Secretary Mayorga confirmed the desire by both countries to further deepen market integration, with a special emphasis on using scientific standards and methods in the decision-making process regarding trade in such products as beef, live cattle, and table stock potatoes, and on jointly pursuing trade opportunities in Asia. In addition, they discussed a variety of trade accords as well as agricultural themes in the G-20.
Ambassador Wayne noted the positive bilateral relationship between U.S. and Mexican regulatory agencies and the resulting successes for animal and plant health programs in Mexico, emphasizing that SAGARPA and USDA/APHIS have a long history of successfully balancing the need to facilitate trade while properly controlling or eradicating harmful plant pests and animal diseases that threaten the agricultural resources in each country.
“The two countries enjoy a complementary trade relationship that maximizes the potential for producers and benefits consumers, on both sides of the border,” Ambassador Wayne said.
Secretary Mayorga also noted that he was looking forward to his upcoming meeting with Secretary Vilsack in Washington, DC, in mid-December, and to advancing the bilateral agenda as well as collaborating to resolve issues of mutual interest.
