Message from the Ambassador of the United States of America

March 14, 2008

Dear Friends and Colleagues:

Over the past two days, my wife Mariasun and I joined U.S. First Lady Laura Bush and Mexico’s First Lady Margarita Zavala to formally launch the U.S.-Mexico Partnership for Breast Cancer Awareness and Research. This Partnership seeks to bring together experts from the U.S. and Mexico in the fight against breast cancer.

The objective of this Partnership is to increase early detection and reduce mortality through improved awareness, increased clinical resources, and world-class research. The United States provides the medical expertise of The University of Texas M. D. Anderson Cancer Center, with the global grassroots network and educational resources of Susan G. Komen for the Cure®, the regional management experience of the Institute of International Education’s San Francisco office (IIE), and the strong commitment of our Embassy here in Mexico.

Breast cancer is the leading cause of cancer related deaths among women in Mexico and throughout Latin America. While countries in the Americas are working to heighten awareness and to provide better screening and treatment for breast cancer, this Partnership represents a significant step in our collaborative efforts to assist the region in eradicating the disease, by building a program focused on empowering women at the grassroots level.
