Mexico City, October 30, 2008. – “This month the U.S. Embassy
has commemorated Breast Cancer Awareness month, encouraging
women all over the country to get screened for breast cancer,
and supporting women suffering from it. The pink ribbon around
our Embassy is one visible reminder to all of us of the importance
of this issue.
“Breast cancer is the primary cause of death from cancer
for women in Mexico. Through the U.S.–Mexico Partnership for
Breast Cancer Awareness and Research, Mexico and the United
States are working together to combat the disease. The U.S.
and Mexico are also working together to combat other forms
of cancer.
“Today, I had the privilege of visiting the brand new Cancer
Center at the ABC Hospital in Mexico City and inaugurating
the Simulation Suite cancer modeling unit donated by the people
of the United States through the American Schools and Hospitals
Abroad office of our Agency for International Development.
The donated simulation equipment will be used to plan radiation
therapy sessions.
“The new Cancer Center will be an important and much needed
advance in offering state-of-the-art attention and care to
cancer patients in Mexico and the Latin American region.
“The ABC Medical Center is a premier medical institution
with more than 100 years serving Mexicans and the international
community in Mexico. It is also well known for its philanthropic
work conducting outreach and providing medical services to
uninsured low income populations.

| Dr. José Hinojosa, Chief of Radiotherapy
of the brand new Cancer Center explains Ambassador
Garza how the simulation suite equipment operates. |
|
“This equipment is the latest of USAID’s donations to support
the ABC Medical Center, which have included a US$3.5 million
donation to renovate and modernize the ABC Medical Center’s
facilities. This demonstrates the ongoing commitment of the
U.S. government to share ideals and best practices in health
care in the region.
"Let me take this opportunity to remind everyone that
early detection is key, and to encourage all those who should
to get screened for breast cancer today.”
