Honoring Patriots and Remembering 9/11

Statement by Ambassador Antonio O. Garza

Mexico City, September 11, 2008 - “Today the Embassy and Consulates fly the flag at half staff in tribute to the courageous men and women who serve and protect the United States and preserve our freedom, and to remember the men and women from over 90 countries, including Mexico, whose lives were taken seven years ago in the terrorist attacks of September 11, 2001.

“I remember 9/11 every day. After the attacks, our leaders in Washington resolved that we would go on the offensive against our enemies. We committed to ferreting out the terrorists and denying them safe haven wherever they try to hide. Since 9/11, the United States and its allies have been fighting a global struggle against terrorist enemies who seek to impose their violent vision on free and peaceful people throughout the world.

“Working together with our allies, we have made progress. We have strengthened our cooperation to undermine al Qaeda's attempts to tap into and co-opt regional terrorist networks for their own strategic purpose. Together, we are working to cut off terrorist financing and disrupt their networks. Through cooperation and intelligence sharing, we have prevented several terrorist attacks before they could destroy more lives.

“In December 2001, President Bush declared September 11 ‘Patriot Day,’ so that we would never forget what we had lost. In his words, ‘On Patriot Day, we remember all those who were taken from us in an instant and seek their lasting memorial in a safer and more hopeful world. We must not allow our resolve to be weakened by the passage of time. We will meet the test that history has given us and continue to fight to rid the world of terrorism and promote liberty around the globe.’

“Today I ask Mexicans and U.S. citizens alike to stop for a moment and honor the memory of those lost.”
