Ambassador Garza Expresses his Condolences to the Family
of Roberto Velasco Bravo
Statement by Ambassador Antonio O. Garza
Mexico City, May 2, 2008 — “I am saddened by the brutal murder
last night of Mr. Roberto Velasco Bravo, Director of Investigations for
the Sensitive Investigations Unit of the Federal Police (SSP).
Mr. Velasco had a distinguished record in the front lines
of the battle against the narco-trafficking cartels, and he
will be sorely missed.
“American law enforcement officials who worked with Mr. Velasco
in recent years expressed to me their respect for his integrity
and dedication to the fight against crime. He was a true professional,
permanently concerned for the welfare of his officers and
the public, and unflinching in the face of the dangers he
faced on a daily basis. Mexico has thousands of brave and
selfless officials confronting the evil of organized criminals
who seek to destroy the country’s very soul -- we should offer
them the same honor and respect we offer this fallen hero
today.
“On behalf of the U.S. Mission in Mexico, I extend my deepest
condolences to Mr. Velasco’s family, colleagues, and friends.
My heart goes out to his wife and infant daughter. I sincerely
hope the perpetrators of this heinous crime will swiftly be
arrested and brought to justice.” |
