Ambassador Garza Speaks at the American Chamber of Commerce
on the U.S.-Mexico Relationship
Statement by Ambassador Antonio O. Garza
Mexico City, February 25, 2008 - “I was pleased to have an
opportunity tonight at the 7th National Convention of the
American Chamber of Commerce in Mexico to speak about the
undeniably strong bilateral relationship between Mexico and
the United States. During the past few years I have watched
the U.S.–Mexico partnership evolve into a more mature, equal
partnership, one that President Bush has said is as ‘rich
as it is complex.’
“Since the 1980s, the Americas has been transformed from
a region with few democracies and generally closed economies,
to one in which all countries, save Cuba, regularly hold democratic
elections and almost all have open economies. And Mexico is
leading the way.
“The United States and Mexico have taken substantial steps
to secure our citizens and energize our economies. We are
now in a time of extraordinary opportunity to build upon past
success and continue to promote real sustainable growth in
both our countries.
“There are challenges ahead, but the United States and Mexico
are working hard to create a safer, more competitive environment.
By continuing to ask the tough, strategic questions about
where we are headed, our leaders can do what is necessary
to make North America the most democratic, safe, and prosperous
continent on Earth.”
