President Bush and President Calderon Exchange Views on
a Wide Range of Issues
Statement by Ambassador Antonio O. Garza
Mexico City, February 5, 2008 – “President Bush and President
Calderon had a conversation today about many of the pressing
matters facing our two countries. During this discussion,
President Bush shared his confidence in and commitment to
the Calderon administration. They exchanged views and opinions
about several issues ranging from the economy, reform efforts
in Mexico, the continued need for high level bi-lateral engagement
in law enforcement, in particular stopping the movement of
arms into the hands of criminals, to President Calderon’s
upcoming visit to the U.S.
“The Merida Initiative was one of the key topics, focusing
on our shared responsibility and the need for ongoing efforts
to battle the narco-violence that afflicts our citizens. What
is obvious to me is that both our Presidents have a clear
sense of what must be done in order to address the extraordinarily
complex issues facing our two countries at this time. Without
a doubt, they are both devoted to advancing our partnership
at every level, to ensure the security and enhance the prosperity
of both of our peoples.”
