Ambassador Garza Announces $1.7 Million in Additional Aid
For Flood-stricken Areas
Statement by Ambassador Antonio O. Garza
Mexico City, November 16, 2007 —“Today, the government of
the United States approved an additional $1.7 million dollars
to provide supplies and goods to facilitate restoration efforts.
With today’s announcement, U.S. assistance to the people of
Tabasco and Chiapas totals over $2.1 million dollars. This
additional support will be provided by the Embassy’s Agency
for International Development through its Office of Foreign
Disaster Assistance.
“When my wife Mariasun and I visited the flood zone last
week, we saw both the extent of the damage, as well as the
bravery and tremendous efforts of the people stricken by the
floodwaters. Viewing first hand such a tragic scene impacted
us profoundly, but seeing the courage and resolve of the victims
also gave us confidence that they will overcome this disaster
and thrive again in the near future. I am proud that the U.S.
continues to cooperate with the government of Mexico in providing
immediate emergency support to the people of this region.
“As the floodwaters in Tabasco and Chiapas begin to recede
and families begin the clean-up process to recover their lives,
the people of the United States stand by our Mexican neighbors
during this tragedy.”
