U.S. Government Provides $250,000 In Relief for Hurricane
Dean Victims
Statement by Ambassador Antonio O. Garza
Mexico City, September 4, 2007- “The outpouring of support
and sympathy shown by the Mexican people when Hurricane Katrina
lashed our Gulf Coast left a lasting impression on the American
people. In the wake of Hurricane Dean’s terrible destruction
in Mexico, the U.S. is contributing reciprocal relief resources
to give support to our friend and neighbor.
“Today the United States provided $250,000 dollars to the
Mexican Red Cross, on behalf of the American people, to speed
Mexico’s recovery efforts for those affected by Hurricane
Dean.
“We feel great compassion for those left injured in the path
of Hurricane Dean’s destruction. Although the early planning
efforts of Mexican authorities minimized the human toll of
the hurricane, many thousands of people have lost their homes
and possessions.
“After a hurricane, providing shelter in the affected areas
is always a priority. In this case, experts from the Embassy’s
office of the U.S. Agency for International Development and
the Mexican Red Cross have identified roofing materials as
among the most critical needs.
“Mexican authorities are taking measures to hasten recovery
in the affected regions. The American people are here to offer
our Mexican neighbors relief aid and support during these
challenging times in Dean’s aftermath, just as they offered
us generous assistance after Hurricane Katrina.” |
