Protecting Intellectual Property Rights - U.S. Embassy Organizes
Training Course for Mexican Officials
Statement by Ambassador Antonio O. Garza
Mexico City, July 27, 2007 – “I am pleased to announce that
the U.S. Embassy, in cooperation with the U.S. Departments
of Justice and Homeland Security and with support from the
World Customs Organization, conducted a five-day training
course July 23-27 on protecting intellectual property rights
(IPR) for 53 Mexican customs and law enforcement officials
in the Port of Veracruz.
“The U.S. has learned that this type of inter-agency cooperation
has proved extremely successful in detecting and preventing
the entry of illegal goods into the United States, and was
invited to share its experiences with Mexican officials.
“This course focused on how to identify and interdict the
importation of pirated and counterfeit goods, and to follow
the seizures of such goods with appropriate administrative
actions and criminal investigations. It emphasized the importance
of a coordinated inter-agency approach to combat the phenomenon
of copyright and trademark infringement, and included a number
of practical exercises, such as the real-time targeting of
inbound containers that had recently arrived in Veracruz.
“Based on this successful training and our mutual interest
in advancing the protection of intellectual property rights
on both sides of our border, the U.S. Embassy will continue
to cooperate with Mexican customs and law enforcement officials,
and will plan additional IPR training courses.” |
