Mexico City, April 28, 2007 – Today, in celebration of Children’s Month in Sonora, the Secretary of Health of the state of Sonora, along with other local officials and community members, inaugurated the trauma center at the Agua Prieta General Hospital. At the event, U.S. and Mexican universities, and government and health department partners demonstrated the medical equipment donated by the United States government.
“Access to high quality emergency health care in border areas is a vital need for the U.S. and Mexico. This new trauma center is an excellent example of a joint effort to bring together public and private collaborators to improve access to public health facilities,” said U.S. Ambassador Antonio O. Garza. “Mexican and American border health groups, working together in partnership, have achieved significant and tangible results for their communities.”
The hospital boasts modern and state-of-the-art installations offering high quality medical care to nearly 100,000 local residents.
The U.S. Embassy, through its Agency for International Development (USAID), supported the development of its trauma unit with a grant of US$300,000 for the purchase of medical equipment and supplies.
