Mexico City, March 29, 2007 – “Daniel Perez, wanted for crimes committed in Los Angeles and San Bernardino Counties, was extradited today to face justice in California, thanks to the cooperation of American and Mexican authorities.
“On April 9, 1999, in Los Angeles County, Perez kidnapped his wife, Anabella, shot her in the head when she tried to escape, and left her for dead. Anabella miraculously survived, and Perez was arrested. Several months later, while free on bond during his trial in Los Angeles, Perez allegedly broke into the San Bernardino County home of Anabella’s father, Carlos Vara (who had testified against Perez the day before), and killed him.
“Perez fled, evading justice until January 23, 2006, when Mexican Federal AFI agents arrested him in Mazatlan after receiving information on his whereabouts from the U.S. Marshals Service. While in hiding, Perez was reportedly selling time-share condominiums in Mazatlan and Cancun. Mexican federal agents moved Perez to a penal facility in Mexico City. After Perez failed in his year-long effort to fight extradition to the United States, Mexican authorities delivered him to the custody of U.S. law enforcement agents this morning, who transported him to Los Angeles.
“A Los Angeles County court convicted Perez of the kidnapping and attempted murder of his wife, and sentenced him to life in prison. Perez still faces trial for the murder of Carlos Vara.
“In recent years, American and Mexican law enforcement agencies have greatly escalated their collaborative efforts to find and arrest wanted felons. The results are obvious and very positive. Perez is the 31st fugitive Mexican authorities have extradited to the United States this year.”
