Mexico City, February 27, 2007 - “American and Mexican values and our way of life are being threatened by narcotics trafficking. Working together in this area of shared responsibility, our two countries can stop the criminal gangs who profit from the misery they create.
“U.S. Office of National Drug Control Policy (ONDCP) Director John Walters visited Mexico today to meet with senior Mexican military and law enforcement officials, including Attorney General Eduardo Medina Mora, the Secretary of Mexico’s Public Security Agency, Genaro Garcia Luna, and National Council on Addictions Executive Secretary Carlos Rodriguez Ajenjo.
“Walters has dedicated his career to finding ways of reducing drug use through treatment of addicts and punishment of drug-traffickers. He recognizes that the problem is not merely the sale of narcotics, but its consumption as well. Today, he discussed with his Mexican counterparts methods of improving our law enforcement cooperation to better fight the war on drugs, including increased extraditions and information sharing to combat drug cartels.”
