Statement by Ambassador Antonio O. Garza, Jr.
Mexico City, August 17, 2006 – “Last Tuesday, the U.S. Marshals Service and the Department of Homeland Security-Immigration and Customs Enforcement in Denver, Colorado, arrested Edgar Alvarez Cruz for violating U.S. immigration law. Alvarez Cruz is believed to be part of a gang of men who raped and murdered no less than 10 women in Ciudad Juarez, Mexico between 1993 and 2003.
Alvarez Cruz is being transferred to a U.S. federal facility in El Paso, Texas, and is expected to be turned over to Mexican law enforcement authorities tomorrow.
The U.S. Marshals Service is assisting the Mexican government task force investigating the unsolved cases of hundreds of women who were murdered or reported missing by their families in Ciudad Juarez and in the state of Chihuahua. Information from Mexican authorities enabled the Marshals Service to track down Alvarez Cruz in Denver and start the process of returning him to Mexico to face justice.
We believe Alvarez Cruz’s arrest will help U.S. and Mexican law enforcement authorities solve numerous cases involving the murders and disappearances of women in Ciudad Juarez and in Chihuahua, and ultimately bring their killers to justice.”
