Mexico City, October 24, 2005 — “The United States will provide $100,000 to Mexico to aid victims of Hurricane Wilma. This relief assistance will be delivered to the Mexican Red Cross on behalf of the American people,” announced Ambassador Tony Garza. “Our thoughts are with those affected by the storm, for the families of those who died, and for those who are working to bring aid and comfort to all of the victims.”
In response to Hurricane Wilma, the U.S. Embassy in Mexico has a task force in place to assist American tourists and others affected by Hurricane Wilma. In addition, American officers are on site in Cancún and Mérida to assist victims. Two government task forces are underway in Washington, D. C. to assist in disaster relief planning.
“The unprecedented support from Mexico for victims of Hurricane Katrina demonstrated the deep friendship between our two nations and the generosity of our neighbor,” said Ambassador Garza. “ Now it is our turn to come to the aid of our Mexican friends.”
The United States recently provided $200,000 in relief aid for Hurricane Stan, which lashed Mexico’s Gulf Coast at the beginning of the month.
