Mexico City, March 30, 2005 - U.S. Attorney General Alberto Gonzales met today with Mexico’s Attorney General Rafael Macedo de la Concha to discuss areas of mutual interest in the common struggle against organized crime.
“I want to thank Mexican Attorney General Macedo de la Concha for extending to me the opportunity to discuss issues important to both the U.S. and Mexico,” Gonzales said. “Our meeting today was a productive one, and I look forward to continuing a beneficial and meaningful working relationship with Attorney General Macedo de la Concha, based on mutual respect and admiration.”
The Attorneys General met in private, then led a working meeting of representatives from both countries. They agreed to intensify coordination in the fight against organized crime, drug trafficking and terrorism in order to make the population on both sides of the border more secure, while respecting national boundaries and laws.
They discussed common concerns regarding extraditions, trafficking in persons, intellectual property crimes and diversion of chemicals to narcotics laboratories. They looked for new ways to improve cooperation by strengthening the exchange of information and providing more technical assistance and training.
Both Attorneys General will continue to build on the sound basis for cooperation they established during this visit in the future as the Security and Prosperity Partnership launched by the Presidents of Mexico, Canada and the United States March 23rd advances.
During his two-day visit to Mexico, Attorney General Gonzalez also met with President Vicente Fox and Foreign Relations Secretary Luis Ernesto Derbez.
