Mexico City, March 29, 2005 - U.S. Attorney General Alberto R. Gonzales arrived in Mexico today for two days of discussions on cross-border law enforcement cooperation with the Mexican government.
Mexico’s Attorney General Rafael Macedo de la Concha and Attorney General Gonzales met for dinner at the residence of U.S. Ambassador Tony Garza shortly after the head of the U.S. Department of Justice arrived late Tuesday.
The U.S. Attorney General’s visit to Mexico came in the context of the new Security and Prosperity Partnership that was launched by the Presidents of Mexico, Canada and the United States just one week earlier.
"I appreciate the opportunity to meet with President Fox and other esteemed Mexican government officials to discuss the important issues facing our countries and how we can continue to cooperate across our borders in ways that benefit our citizens, our security and our economies," Gonzales said.
The U.S. Attorney General is scheduled to meet with President Fox, Foreign Secretary Luis Ernesto Derbez and Secretary of Government Santiago Creel on Wednesday, before going to a working meeting and lunch with Attorney General Macedo de la Concha. He will depart for Washington in the late afternoon.
“Attorney General Gonzales’ decision to visit Mexico so early in his tenure as President Bush’s chief law enforcement officer underscores the importance that this administration places on this relationship,” Ambassador Garza noted. “I’ve worked with Al Gonzales for many years and I know how much he cares about and values our partnership with Mexico.”
Among the topics to be discussed are cooperation against major criminal organizations engaged in narcotics, trafficking in persons, money laundering and corruption.
