Ceremony to award CASS scholarships On July 23, 2008, Ambassador Garza presided over the ceremony to award scholarships to 27 students who will be going to community colleges in the U.S. to obtain two-year technical degrees in fields like natural resource and water management, quality control, electronics, agribusiness, and small and medium enterprise. Fifteen teachers will attend Arizona State University for one year of training and capacity building in order to return to Mexico and strengthen rural primary education for indigenous children. 	Since 2001 the TIES (Training, Internships, Exchanges and Scholarships) program has granted a total of 253 scholarships for students and teachers from the states of Chiapas, Chihuahua, Guanajuato, Guerrero, Jalisco, México, Michoacán, Nayarit, Oaxaca, Querétaro, San Luis Potosí and Mexico City. Georgetown University implements this component through its CASS program. Sitting with Amb. Garza were: Valeria Uribe, National Coordinator of CASS/Georgetown; Maestra Yolanda Ramírez from the Directorate of Indigenous Education of the Secretariat of Public Education; and Nora Pinzon, Director of the Education Program of USAID Mexico
In addressing the grantees, Amb. Garza (here next to the U.S. flag) remarked: "I also want to remind you that you will become ambassadors for Mexico during your time in the US. I invite you to share the richness of the vibrant Mexican culture with everyone you meet; and when you are back in Mexico, share the knowledge and experience gained with your families, paisanos and colleagues."
	“The participants’ experiences bring the United States and Mexico closer together as the students become ambassadors of Mexico while in the U.S. I feel honored to meet and support so many talented and enthusiastic Mexicans, who are working hard to improve their minds, improve their communities, and improve their country,” said Ambassador Garza.
