| The U.S. Embassy in Mexico
advises U.S. citizens that Government of Mexico has extended
the hurricane warning for the Gulf coast of Mexico from south
of Campeche westward to La Cruz. A tropical storm warning
remains in effect along the Gulf coast of Mexico from north
of La Cruz to Bahia Algodones. Flooding and strong winds can
be expected as the storm surge of the hurricane makes landfall
on the Gulf coast of Mexico on the afternoon of August 22.
According to the National Hurricane Center, the storm is
expected to produce heavy rain in southern and central Mexico.
These rains could cause life-threatening flash floods and
mudslides.
As the storm progresses inland, areas far from the coastline
in southern and central Mexico may experience destructive
winds and flooding. Stay inside until local authorities say
it is safe. Areas affected by the storm may experience widespread
damage to infrastructure power outages and shortages of food,
water and medical facilities. Power lines, trees and other
fallen debris may block roads. U.S. citizens are advised to
stay away from downed power lines to avoid the risk of electric
shock or electrocution to avoid flood waters. The water may
be contaminated or electrically charged. Should you find yourself
in the path of rising water, seek higher ground immediately.
The U.S. Embassy has no reports of any injured U.S. citizens
at this time.
The Merida, Cancun, Cozumel, Villahermosa, Veracruz and Minatitlan
airports are open, but travelers should contact the airlines
directly to confirm if flights are operating before coming
to the airport. Airports in the path of the storm may experience
flight delays.
The Embassy cannot make reservations on behalf of U.S. citizens.
Passengers should contact the airlines directly via the following
