Missing Persons

Concerned relatives and friends may call us when they have not heard from a loved one who is abroad. We can help pass messages to Americans that have gone missing in another country. Consular officers use the information provided by the mission person's family friends to locate the individual, and pass on the caller’s message.  Our chances of finding the missing American increase with the amount of information provided by family and friends. 

If you need to reach someone in Mexico because of an emergency or because you are worried about his or her health or welfare, please contact the Embassy directly:

  • For emergency assistance, please call us at [52](55)5080-2000, ext. 4440 from 8:30 a.m. to 5:00 p.m. Monday through Friday except holidays.
    • Outside of working hours, ONLY for assistance in an EMERGENCY directly affecting a U.S. citizen in Mexico: call the switchboard at [52](55)5080-2000, press 0 at the prompt, and ask for the Embassy Duty Officer.
  • For non-emergency inquiries, please e-mail us at
  • U.S. citizens can also visit Special Citizen Services between 8:30am and 3:30pm, Monday through Friday except holidays.  We are located in the U.S. Embassy in Room 101. You are encouraged to call to receive the appropriate guidance (an in-person visit may not be necessary).  

Note: Special Citizen Services does not handle visas or immigration information requests. 

You may also contact the State Department's Office of Overseas Citizens Services at (202) 647-5225.  The State Department will contact the Consular Section of the Embassy in Mexico City, which will attempt to locate the person and pass along any urgent message.

Privacy Act of 1974
According to law consular officers may not reveal information regarding an individual American’s location, welfare, intentions, or problems to anyone, including family members and Congressional representatives, without the expressed consent of that individual. Although sympathetic to the distress this can cause concerned families, consular officers must comply with the provisions of the Privacy Act.
