Visit to Rural Schools in Huichol Communities of the State of Jalisco
On May 30, 2007, Ambassador Garza visited four Huichol communities in the sierra of Jalisco. There he was able to witness firsthand some of the positive results of the Training, Internships, Exchanges and Scholarships (TIES) program.

The students of the grade school in the township of San Miguel Huaixtita warmly welcomed Amb. Garza. "Education is key for the development of these Huichol communities, and we are proud to continue providing support to teachers and students who deserve a brighter future," said Amb. Garza.

Teachers Agueda Arellano and Juan Salvador Diaz studied for one year at colleges in the U.S. under the auspices of the TIES program. Arnulfo Ramirez Melendez from the school in Tecolote, Jalisco, has been selected to study next year in California. Above right, Amb. Garza chats with a student of Mr. Diaz, and at left, congratulates Ms. Arellano.

Cristobal Carrillo, of the Department of Indigenous Education of the state of Jalisco, explains the work of Huichol art which the community presented to Amb. Garza. Also listening are Miguel Angel Martinez, Secretary of Education of Jalisco, and Monica Sanchez, State Coordinator for International Relations. "I want to thank them and their organizations that contribute to the success of these programs," concluded Amb. Garza.
