Ambassador Garza Presents $865,000 in
Equipment for Fight Against Tuberculosis

This donation will be used in the prevention and
diagnosis of tuberculosis in seven Mexican states.

Attending the World Tuberculosis Day event at the National Institute
of Respiratory Diseases in Tlalpan, Mexico City, Ambassador Garza
presented $865,000 dollars in computers and laboratory equipment as
well as vehicles to Health Minister Dr. Julio Frenk. Ambassador Garza,
Enriqueta Basilio, Honorary Spokeswoman for the Fight Against Tubercu-
losis, Dr. Julio Frenk, and Dr. Elizabeth Ferreira, National TB Director,
in front of one of the mobile tuberculosis units.

"The people of the United States—through this donation of equipment—
demonstrate their commitment to providing the tools to fight
tuberculosis," said U.S. Ambassador Tony Garza before Dr. Frenk,
Dr. Fernando Cano, the Director of the Mexican Institute of
Respiratory Diseases, and Dr. Roberto Tapia, Deputy Minister for
Health Prevention and Promotion, as well as other officials who
attended the event.

Ambassador Garza hands over the keys of a donated vehicle to the
Secretary of Health of the state of Guanajuato, as Dr. Frenk and
Dr. Ferreira look on. Ambassador Garza acknowledged the contributions
of health care workers: “Their daily dedication and attention to their
patients, laboratory research and public health campaigns are the heart
and soul of the fight against deadly diseases.”
