Ambassador Garza Recognizes Dr. Ernesto Villanueva

On April 14, 2004, Dr. Ernesto Villanueva received the “Honor for Support of Journalism Award” from the Trust for the Americas, a foundation that is part of the Organization of American States.

In honor of Dr. Villanueva, Ambassador Garza hosted a reception on May 18 during which he recognized the efforts of Dr. Ernesto Villanueva and others who led the movement for access to information in Mexico culminating in the passage of the Access to Information Law of June 2002.

“Access to information is one of the pillars of democratic societies,” said U.S. Ambassador Tony Garza. “The untiring work of Ernesto Villanueva that contributed to the passage of the Access to Information Law is an outstanding achievement that will make democracy in Mexico stronger.”

U.S. and Mexican English teachers

Ambassador Garza hosted a reception on Monday,
May 17, to honor U.S. and Mexican English teachers on occasion of "Día del Maestro" and to welcome the Embassy's new English Language Officer, Dr. Kay Davis.

In his remarks, the Ambassador expressed his appreciation to the group for their dedication, hard work and the positive way in which they impact the lives of their students. He stressed the Embassy's commitment to continue to support them in their efforts.

The Ambassador used the opportunity to present Certificates of Appreciation to two of the Embassy's closest partners in enhancing the teaching of English in Mexico and the
bi-national educational agenda:
Dr. Sylvia B. Ortega Salazar, Undersecretary of Education for Mexico City's Educational Services and Dr. Daniel González Spencer, Director General of International Affairs of the Secretariat of Education (SEP).
